What is Dr. Neal Wearing?
For September 2, 2007
- A white robe, called an Alb. This is the most ancient clothing for Christian clergy, dating back to the 1st Century AD when it was the everyday clothing of Roman citizens. Yes, it is essentially a “toga.”
- A Cincture. This is the proper name for the rope that is worn around the waist, binding the alb closely to the wearer’s body. If looped properly, it also serves to hold the stole in place.
- A Stole. Under the Chasuble it is traditional to wear a stole, which is the vestment of the Order of Elder. It is a symbol of the “yoke of obedience” to Christ and of our service to church.

- A Chasuble, which is the large green “poncho-like” garment Greg is wearing over his alb, is the principle liturgical vestment worn by clergy while presiding at the Table during Holy Communion. Prior to its adoption by Christian clergy in the 2nd Century, it was the traveling cloak of a Roman nobleman. Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Episcopalian, and a growing number United Methodist clergy wear it.
- Since we are in the Season of “Kingdomtide,” the color of the Chasuble and the Stole is green.
- The Clerical Collar is a well-recognized symbol of the “Representative Ministry” of the Church. Dr. Neal wears a collar because (1) he hates ties, (2) it is a visual symbol to others, and reminder to himself, of his calling to proclaim the Gospel light to all.
