At Martinique we took the Tropical Tour & St. Pierre Excursion, which took us to
St. Pierre, a town which was completely destroyed by Mt. Pelee's eruption in 1902;
there we saw the ruins of the city, toured the volcanological museum, and had a good
view of the Volcano.
From St. Pierre we traveled on to one of the oldest rum distilleries on the island,
where we had some excellent views of Mt Pelee, got to tour the distillery, and got
to taste -- and buy -- some of the excellent Agricol Rum. From here, we traveled on through
the Tropical Rain Forest to the world-famous Botanical Garden of Balata,
where we got to tour the extensive grounds and view some of the extremely rare plants
which they have conserved there. This tour was supposed to also visit
the Balata Church, a miniature replica of the Sacred Heart Basilica of Montmartre in Paris,
but because several of those on our tour took more than 30 minutes longer
at the Gardens than they should, we were not able to make that stop. Upon departure I
managed to get some photographs on the Carnival "Spirit" and of the Star Clipper.
